"I want to see something I've never seen before",- said by the American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. His life of New York underground and rock scenes in the 1970s and '80s made its way into his art.
During the Student Day it's free entrance for students to see Mapplethorpe's career in the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma. It's also free on the first Friday of the month ;) The name derives from 'chiasm', which stands for intersection, particularly the crossing of optic nerves.
His works, arrived from Paris to Helsinki, blend beauty and eroticism (I think some of them were meant for adults?) with pain, pleasure and death. This gives the opportunity to learn about the art and life of photographic artist.
To me there were a few interesting pictures, but generally I didn't quite understand about work of arts. In museums I would be more interested in fossils or other ancient items. For example I would like to visit the Forbidden City of in China since I have barely been to the country, except Hong Kong and Wenzhou xD British Museum is also on my mind.
Anyway the most interesting parts in Kiasma were the structure of the Museum and "Element" -section on the highest floor. The material of structures was light. The staircases winded in different directions, curving corridors and ramps.
Making of Dialogue |
Think of One Thing |
The ideas of Element works were to characterized our relationship with nature - from origins to destruction, change to permanence and lightness to weight. I really liked the works such as Think of One Thing and Making of Dialogue.
You can also take a break in Kiasma Cafe and enjoy the views outside into Mannerheimintie. The museum provides exhibitions, collections, and performances in the Kiasma Theatre, workshops and guided tours.
